Letโs start with some gibberish:โฃ
โฃ๐น DIN 7343 - Spiral Roll Pinโฃ
๐น DIN 1481 - Roll Pin ("C" Pin)โฃ

Never heard of these before? Perfectโtime to learn!โฃ
One of their use cases is creating a simple hinge.ย
But hereโs the catchโif you check the specs, youโll see these pins are designed to fit into holes with an ๐๐ ๐ญ๐จ๐ฅ๐๐ซ๐๐ง๐๐โฃ.โฃ
Now, a quick reminder: hinges are supposed to... move! ๐โฃ
So which holes should actually be reamed to H7? Why not the outer ones? Why do I suggest reaming only the ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฅ๐ ๐ก๐จ๐ฅ๐ ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฆ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ๐?โฃ
It all comes down to ๐๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐ง ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐๐ฆ๐๐ฅ๐ฒ (๐๐ ๐).โฃ
If you ream the holes in the โforkโ part, youโll have to drive the pin through ๐ญ๐ฐ๐จ ๐ญ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ-๐๐ข๐ญ ๐ก๐จ๐ฅ๐๐ฌ along its lengthโtwice! Not fun, and not efficient. Worse, you risk damaging the pin, making it too loose in the second hole.โฃ
As an engineer, I ๐๐จ๐งโ๐ญ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ค๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ ๐๐ฆ๐๐ฅ๐.โฃ
And letโs be honestโIโm also a bit lazy ๐ (not at work, just when it comes to unnecessary extra tasks!)
By ๐๐ก๐จ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐ก๐จ๐ฅ๐ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ญ, you make assembly smoother and avoid headaches down the line.โฃ
A small ๐๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐ง ๐ญ๐ข๐ฉ, but a big difference in execution. Hope this insight sticks with youโjust like the pin should!โฃ
