Pin Based Hinge

Letโ€™s start with some gibberish:โฃ

โฃ๐Ÿ”น DIN 7343 - Spiral Roll Pinโฃ

๐Ÿ”น DIN 1481 - Roll Pin ("C" Pin)โฃ

Never heard of these before? Perfectโ€”time to learn!

One of their use cases is creating a simple hinge.ย

But hereโ€™s the catchโ€”if you check the specs, youโ€™ll see these pins are designed to fit into holes with an ๐‡๐Ÿ• ๐ญ๐จ๐ฅ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ง๐œ๐žโฃ.

Now, a quick reminder: hinges are supposed to... move! ๐Ÿ˜„โฃ

So which holes should actually be reamed to H7? Why not the outer ones? Why do I suggest reaming only the

It all comes down to

If you ream the holes in the โ€œforkโ€ part, youโ€™ll have to drive the pin through ๐ญ๐ฐ๐จ ๐ญ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ-๐Ÿ๐ข๐ญ ๐ก๐จ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ along its lengthโ€”twice! Not fun, and not efficient. Worse, you risk damaging the pin, making it too loose in the second hole.

As an engineer, I

And letโ€™s be honestโ€”Iโ€™m also a bit lazy ๐Ÿ˜‰ (not at work, just when it comes to unnecessary extra tasks!)

By ๐œ๐ก๐จ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐ก๐จ๐ฅ๐ž ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐‡๐Ÿ• ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ญ, you make assembly smoother and avoid headaches down the line.

A small ๐๐ž๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐ง ๐ญ๐ข๐ฉ, but a big difference in execution. Hope this insight sticks with youโ€”just like the pin should!
