A Few Mechanical Design Tips:
What's on the table this time? ⚙️
This mechanism is part of a long and complicated
automation line I designed in the past.
The line itself was part of a new product development
for the food industry and... it totally failed! ❌
The reasons don't matter, years have passed,
and all that's left is to learn from it for the future.
So, I'm sharing some of my design considerations with you:
🟧 Orange: The mechanism required two discrete positions, so using a simple piston was the right solution here.
🟦 Blue: Linear guide with one side defining the position (left - master) and the other just providing support. This type of guide is so common that there are off-the-shelf solutions; there is no need to reinvent the wheel.
🟪 Pink: The base here is an aluminum plate. Even though it comes in relatively accurate dimensions, attaching the mechanism to the external world requires machining precision. Therefore, wherever precision was needed, machining was done to ensure dimensional accuracy and planned tolerance stack-up.
